Little Box Sauna was commissioned as part of Creative Placemaking in the South Loop, an initiative of Bloomington Theatre and Art Center and the City of Bloomington, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Little Box Sauna is a new kind of “mobile hot spot” that creates a visible small-scale space for socializing within the large expansive spaces within the urban fabric. The sauna traveled through the Bloomington community during the cold months of February and March of 2015, with one-week stops at each host’s parking lot creating a hub where employees and visitors can socialized in a way that is new to the community, based on Finnish and other cultural traditions of group sweat.

Little Box Sauna supports links between businesses and people to generate meaningful communication, and it is an activator for changing the physical space of the South Loop. By inhabiting the expansive open spaces between large structures, it gives people a destination they can see and walk to, a stopping place between buildings and cars. It brings in new people while celebrating those there every day, and builds density and excitement for each of the project partners and the district as a whole.
